Why the Right Seat Matters: Paediatric Seating from Seating Matters

Why seating matters for children

For a child who spends much of the day sitting, the chair they sit in shapes far more than comfort. It affects how they breathe, eat, play, learn and join in with the people around them.

Children with complex postural needs often cannot reposition themselves easily. Without the right support, they can slump, slide or lean to one side. Over time, that can lead to discomfort, skin damage and changes in posture that are hard to reverse.

The right seat works the other way. It gives a stable base so a child can lift their head, use their hands and take part in everyday life at home, at school and out in the community.

What good seating does for a child

Good sitting means the pelvis and spine are aligned, the head is balanced over the hips, weight is spread evenly through both hips, and the hands are free to play and explore. The right chair helps with:

Seating is also one part of 24-hour postural care. Alongside positioning in lying and standing, it can reduce health risks and make day-to-day care easier for families and carers.

Phoenix Petite: maximum support

The Phoenix Petite is the most supportive chair in the Seating Matters petite range. It is designed for highly dependent children and young people with complex postural needs, including those who need significant head and upper-body support.

Key features include:

It can suit children with conditions such as cerebral palsy, scoliosis, kyphosis or spina bifida, where a high level of postural support is needed.

Sorrento Petite: simple, adjustable comfort

The Sorrento Petite offers tilt in space, pressure management and postural support in a chair that is simple to use day to day. It suits children who need a supportive, adjustable seat but not the full head and upper-body system of the Phoenix Petite.

Like the Phoenix Petite, it has:

This makes it a practical choice at home, at school or in respite settings, where comfort and ease of use matter as much as clinical support.

Choosing the right chair

No two children sit the same way, so the right chair always starts with an assessment. Body shape, muscle tone, skin condition, daily routine and where the chair will be used all shape the choice between the Phoenix Petite and the Sorrento Petite, and how it is set up.

An assessment also looks ahead. Children grow and their needs change, so the aim is a chair that can be adjusted over time rather than replaced.
