Innovative Adaptation: Creating Safe, Independent Care in a Compact Bathroom
15/11/25

The Challenge
For occupational therapists (OTs), working in private homes often means finding safe, functional solutions within very limited spaces. In this case, the client’s bathroom was particularly small, making it difficult for carers to provide assistance safely. The standard toilet setup required carers to twist and lean awkwardly, creating a significant manual handling hazard and increasing the risk of strain or injury.
The Approach
The OT’s priorities were clear:
- Reduce physical strain and prevent unsafe movements for carers
- Support safer, more natural working postures
- Encourage the client’s independence, ideally moving towards single-handed care
To meet these goals, the OT needed an approach that combined practicality, user comfort, and intelligent use of space — without compromising accessibility.
The Solution
After exploring the available options, the Ropox Toilet Lifter emerged as the ideal choice. Its slim, height-adjustable design made it a perfect fit for the restricted bathroom layout. The lifter allows carers to assist at a comfortable, upright height, eliminating awkward bending, while also giving the user more control during transfers.
To complement this setup, a Geberit AquaClean was also installed. The integrated washing and drying functions provided several key advantages:
- Fewer transfers for personal hygiene
- Less need for direct carer assistance
- Greater comfort and privacy for the user
The adjustable comfort settings help the user remain seated comfortably, extending their ability to complete daily routines independently and with dignity.
“We were uncertain whether the equipment would fit, but the installation exceeded expectations. The clever use of space and the improvement in usability have impressed everyone involved.”
The Outcome
Together, the Ropox Toilet Lifter and Geberit AquaClean created a smart, space-conscious adaptation that achieved every objective:
- Carers can now work in upright, ergonomic positions
- The user has gained greater independence, moving closer to single-handed care
- Manual handling demands during hygiene tasks have been greatly reduced
- The system integrates neatly into the space, maintaining full functionality and comfort
“Excellent feedback all around – an impressive installation and an intelligent use of every inch of space.”
Reflections
This case demonstrates how thoughtful design and collaboration can overcome even the toughest space limitations. By focusing equally on safety, independence, and dignity, OTs can deliver highly effective adaptations that improve daily life for both users and carers - proving that great solutions don’t always require great spaces.
